The classes will focus on writing exercises and games to generate material and inspire creativity. This is not a workshop or critique, though we will read our own work and discuss it. The focus is not on one or another particular genre; the techniques and approach will be applicable to fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. The focus of the class will be on words and on finding the resonances between small groups of words around which we can build sentences, stanzas, paragraphs, narratives, and larger works. This practice is a practice of discovery, of getting away from what a piece of writing might be “about” (though that is important) and getting deeply into the material of a piece of writing, words, phrases, the energy that great writing builds between words which then spreads out into the entire work.
